Clinton Destroying Democratic Party, Say Top Donors

How can Hillary Clinton claim the ability to bring this country together, when she’s the one tearing her own political party apart? Clinton Destroying Democratic Party, Say Top DonorsBy Cliff Montgomery – May 5th, 2008Many top Democratic Party donors are furious about the attempted character assassination of Barack Obama by the Illinois senator’s remaining competitor for the Democratic nomination, Senator Hillary Clinton (D-NY).Party movers and shakers also are worried that the ‘slash-and-burn’ tactics employed by the New York senator and her husband, former President Bill Clinton, against the wildly popular Obama may do irreversible harm to Democrats’ core liberal and African-American constituencies.”I think she is destroying the Democratic Party,” New York lawyer Daniel Berger recently told The Washington Post.”There’s no way for her to win this election except by destroying [Obama]. I just don’t like it. So in my own little way, I’m trying to send her a message,” he added.Berger has let his bank account do the talking. Though previously he had given Clinton the maximum allowable contribution of $2,300,  the former Clinton supporter recently gave a $2,300 donation to Barack Obama. In all, more than 70 major Clinton donors began writing checks to the Obama camp in March, according to recent campaign records.Wealthy liberal donors aren’t the only ones angry at Clinton’s increasingly ugly tactics against any person who stands between her and presidential power.Former Chile ambassador Gabriel Guerra-Mondragon was proud to have served during the presidency of Bill Clinton, had long thought of himself as a personal friend of Hillary, and understandably jumped at the chance to be a “Hill-Raiser”–one of those well-connected individuals who may be called upon to rake in about $500,000 from other donors for Sen. Clinton’s presidential run.But no longer. Guererra-Mondragon recently left the Clinton camp to serve on Sen. Obama’s finance committee.”Looking at it as coldly as I can, I just don’t see how Senator Clinton can overcome Senator Obama with delegates and popular votes. I want this fight to be over–the quicker, the better,” he told the Post. The former ambassador appears to have a valid point. It is Obama who has the greater appeal among independents, the young, and even a good number of former Republicans. And Clinton’s superdelegate lead has fallen from 106 at last year’s end to 23, states a tally by The Associated Press. In many ways, Barack Obama is to liberal Democrats what Ronald Reagan was to neo-conservative Republicans: He is a person who can explain his core group’s complicated, sometimes deeply emotional viewpoints in a clear, uncomplicated and appealing manner. Even if a voter disagrees with him on some points, that voter usually feels that he is hearing from a person whom he may trust as his representative. That is an appeal far beyond mere party politics. And for many Americans, it is an appeal Hillary Clinton simply does not possess. She certainly is intelligent enough to handle the presidency. But no one outside of a blind Clinton supporter really believes that the fiercely divisive Hillary Clinton is the person who can bring all Americans together at this critical time in our history. We at The Spark wonder how Hillary Clinton can claim the ability to bring this country together, when she’s the one tearing her own political party apart.People such as billionaire New York financier William Louis-Dreyfus agrees. Though he’d long been a firm Clinton supporter, he told the Post he switched to Obama after watching the two on the campaign trail.”However much one might have supported the Clintons…I began to believe [that] Obama represents a new approach. He gives off such a sense of relevance that he’s sort of irresistible,” Louis-Dreyfus told the Post. He’s also become furious over the bitter tone of the Clinton camp.”At the end of the day, all she had to do was open her mouth for me not to believe her,” he added.Like what you’re reading so far?
