It seems the Democratic-run panel used the simplest smear of career politicians–a flat-out lie. Did Senate Panel Lie About FBI Security For Classified Info?By Cliff Montgomery – July 30th, 2008 published a July 19th article entitled, FBI HQ Not Cleared To Handle Classified Intelligence. This was because a June 23rd Senate Appropriations Committee study clearly stated:”The Hoover Building does not meet the Interagency Security Committee’s criteria for a secure Federal facility capable of handling intelligence and other sensitive information.”But it seems The Spark was fooled by the simplest ploy of career politicians–a flat-out lie.In fact, it has become clear that all “intelligence and other sensitive information” currently at the FBI’s Hoover Building is in fact properly safeguarded. The deceit was uncovered by Eric Umansky of ProPublica, a new organization dedicated to investigative journalism. At first, Umansky appeared to get the usual hair-splitting and false rhetoric most Americans have come to expect from the Bush Administration. FBI Assistant Director Patrick Findlay wrote to Umansky that:”The Interagency Security Committee (ISC) criteria deal only with physical security of federal facilities. The J. Edgar Hoover Building…does not meet the ISC (physical security) criteria, in terms of standoff distance and other blast mitigation measures.”[But] these criteria do not have anything to do with information security or handling intelligence or sensitive information,” continued Findlay.”From an information security standpoint, FBI information is secure…all intelligence and sensitive information are properly safeguarded and classified information is properly contained, to include being processed and/or discussed in accredited SCIF (Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility) space,” Findlay wrote. And this time, the hair-splitting and false rhetoric was solely from the Democratic-run Senate Appropriations Committee.A panel spokeswoman admitted to Umansky that the committee report was only referring to the Hoover Building’s physical security, and not to its information security, despite the panel’s misleading statement that the FBI headquarters was incapable of “handling intelligence and other sensitive information.”In short, the Democratic-led Senate panel lied for cheap political gain. But we at should have known better than to take the unverified word of career politicians. We are sorry for this error.Like what you’re reading so far? How Necessary Laws Are Killed These Days
Lawmakers generally only fight to protect the things they care about – and all too often, that just doesn’t include the lives of most of their constituents.
