Is Bush Looking For ‘September Surprise’ In Pakistan?By Cliff Montgomery – Sept. 17th, 2008There’s something strange going on these days around the northwest borderlands between Afghanistan and Pakistan.It seems that the Bush Administration suddenly has decided that the Pakistani government just isn’t doing enough to find the leaders of al-Qaeda and the Taliban, who reside in that country’s tribal regions bordering Afghanistan.Al-Qaeda and Taliban leaders are the individuals who actually master-minded the attacks of September 11th, 2001. For years, George W. Bush has instead turned U.S. attention and military might to Iraq, which had nothing to do with either the 9/11 attacks or the two groups behind them.Now suddenly desperate to bring al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden to justice, Bush hastily has ordered U.S. military raids from Afghanistan into Pakistan–without obtaining the permission of the Pakistani government, of course.The U.S. military began the recent onslaught a few weeks ago, with increased strikes via missile-firing drone aircraft.Then came the Angor Adda raid on September 3rd–“the first overt ground incursion by American troops into Pakistan since the deployment of U.S. forces in Afghanistan in late 2001,” stated a Sept. 15th article from Reuters wire service.At least 15 people–all civilians, including children and women–were killed during the South Waziristan raid. The impulsive act of aggression has outraged the Pakistani people, and produced a swift and firm diplomatic protest.General Ashfaq Kayani, Pakistan’s army chief, declared in a tough statement last week “that Pakistan would not allow foreign troops on its soil and Pakistan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity would be defended at all costs,” stated the Reuters article.Why Bush’s sudden interest in finding the real ring-leaders behind the 9/11 attacks? Perhaps it’s a sudden bout of real patriotism from America’s self-described “decider”…but we doubt it. From the very day of the attacks, there has been no doubt of who committed the 2001 terrorist attacks on Washington, DC and New York City.So where was all this passion to find bin Laden and other al-Qaeda leaders, along with their Taliban friends, during the last seven years? Bin Laden and his terrorist group al-Qaeda were just as dangerous through that entire period as they are today.The truth is, an administration which so clearly has allowed America’s real enemies to roam free for seven years cannot realistically claim to be truly interested in catching them now.We at believe that Bush’s new-found interest in justice for the 9/11 masterminds has more to do with the presidential election occurring in a few weeks.With the last eight years of Executive Branch incompetence now finally catching up to this neo-conservative White House, the last, best hope of securing another four years of ideological madness for the current GOP leadership is in quickly capturing Osama bin Laden and eliminating the leadership of al-Qaeda and the Taliban.Bush apparently is only interested in finishing off the terrorist leaders behind the 9/11 attacks if it can produce a “September Surprise” for his political party–a sudden, overwhelming victory against terrorism shortly before the general election that would influence a grateful American electorate, and give neo-conservatives another four years in the White House.But Bush’s illogical drive into Iraq in 2003–a country the U.S. had no legitimate reason to invade and occupy–eliminated most of the moral force which America’s “War on Terrorism” held just after the 9/11 attacks.
