TSA Workplace

By Cliff Montgomery – Jan. 30th, 2013

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) is getting ready to launch an investigation into the apparently questionable work environment at the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).

A number of TSA employees have complained of poor management and a hostile work environment.

There may be some truth to these charges. The EEOC study will come on the heels of a damning report on the TSA released in October by the land Security Department’s inspector general. That study discovered that officials at the transportation agency often failed to correctly handle employee complaints about a lack of equal opportunities, and maintained a “rampant” workplace favoritism.

“… [T]here has been a pattern of poor management practices and inappropriate use of informal administrative processes to assess and address misconduct,” stated land Security’s inspector general.

The land Security Department is the TSA’s parent agency.

As a result of these findings, EEOC has declared that it will conduct its own investigation into TSA’s work environment.

“I am encouraged that the EEOC agreed with my assessment of the inspector general’s findings and will conduct an investigation of possible discrimination at TSA and review any possible non-compliance with federal workplace protections,” stated Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-MS), who serves as the Ranking Member on the U.S. House land Security Committee.

“These protections were put in place for a reason – and we cannot allow discriminatory practices to undermine TSA’s critical mission of securing this nation against the terrorist threat,” he added.
