Donald Trump has been caught lying about his financial worth, about having the 2020 election “stolen” from him, and about having “contained” COVID-19. He also continually misinformed Americans about methods to combat the disease, after numerous deaths forced him to admit that he hadn’t contained COVID-19 after all.
So we shouldn’t be surprised to discover that he is now lying about crime – especially violent crime – being out-of-control in cities that just happen to have a mayor belonging to the Democratic Party.
In fact, the evidence instead reveals that there is no discernable difference between crime rates among Republican mayors or among Democratic ones, according to a report released earlier this year from George Washington University (GWU).
A few matters Trump fails to mention:
-Many of the safest U.S. cities have Democrats as mayors. For instance, San Jose, San Diego and Irvine, CA, are all led by Democrats, and are some of the safest cities in the nation. In fact, a report released this month by tech company SmartAsset declared San Jose to be the safest large city in the U.S.
Also, Boston, MA and New York City are each recognized as one of the safest cities per capita in the U.S. – and each has a Democrat for its mayor. In recent years, New York has seen an uptick in crime, though statistics reveal it still enjoys a relatively low crime rate per capita. Most of that uptick in crime has occurred under the mayorship of Eric Adams, a Democratic moderate who has been trying to utilize the more conservative-leaning approach of a stronger law enforcement. While some numbers have improved, Adams is still struggling with increased crime rates in certain matters.
The American left practically owns the mayor’s office of U.S. cities: Nine of the 10 largest cities have a mayor who is either Democratic or who leans left. Among the top 100 largest U.S. cities, Democrats control 66 of the top 100, with some other left-leaning mayors described as independents or non-partisans. So just about any issue affecting large cities will seem to be a Democratic problem, when it is much more clearly a big-city problem. We know this for a fact, because …
-Republican mayors of major U.S. cities have had their own problems tackling crime. The cities of Jacksonville, Fl, Bakersfield, CA, Tulsa, OK and Stockton, CA were all cities that saw an increase of crime under Republican mayors. A number of these cities appear to have later voted in Democrats – and, presumably, people of other political affiliations – in part because Republicans had failed to effectively combat crime.
-But what of the report released in January by George Washington University? The University employed “data from nearly 400 cities over three decades and advanced research methods” in an effort to see whether the mayor’s party affiliation actually has a discernable effect on crime.
The University’s volumes of data “show that [a] mayors’ partisanship has [a] limited influence on crime and policing,” according to its study. “Electing a Democrat rather than a Republican as mayor leads to no detectable impact on police staffing or expenditures on criminal justice,” added the report, “nor does it lead to changes in crime or arrest rates.”
So once again, Trump makes wild claims he never attempts to back up with solid evidence, and further claims that everyone who disagrees with him is lying.
But the facts cited above reveal that the only liar in the discussion is Trump.
